The clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in. For many this is the time of year that their boat is put to rest. Winterising your boat doesn’t need to cost a fortune, and trust me it is well worth the effort!
Prevent Condensation
When you boat is laid for the winter, you’ll need to take action to prevent condensation. Leaving the fridge, cupboards and drawers open allows ventilation. In turn preventing condensation and ultimately mould! Don’t forget to prop up bunk cushions and take extra linen and clothing out to store elsewhere.
Use it
There are parts of your boat that hate inactivity. Specifically the engine! The best way to winterise your boat is to continue to use it. However if winter definitely marks the end of your boating year, think about lifting it out of the water.
Out of Water
You may want to consider filling your fuel tank if you are lifting your boat out of the water. This will prevent condensation within the tank. You could even take the opportunity to use some fuel treatment and stop any diesel bugs from developing, before filling the tank.
Batteries
Fully charges batteries are less likely to freeze at sub-zero temperatures. If possible you could even remove or disconnect the batteries. If this is not an option, keep them fully charged to make sure they are in tip top condition for the spring boating season.
Engine Oil
Make sure you change the oil filter and engine oil. Over the year, acidic by-products of the combustion inside the engine will leave you with contaminated oil. Not replacing the oil will shorten your engine’s lifespan. After all a yearly boat service won’t break the bank!
There are many different boats and no matter which boat you own it is always a good idea to take precautions in winter. A little effort now is guaranteed to save you money when the spring boating season comes.
